08/16/16How Much Light is Enough Light

Lighting choices vary, depending on the needs of the applicable location and personal preferences of individuals in the area. A “one size fits all” solution is rarely available when determining the lighting requirements of multiple environments. For example, lighting configurations for an office may differ, compared to a packaging warehouse. Even if the two facilities were the same size, the type of work being carried out in the buildings dictate the properties or characteristics [...]

02/26/16Understanding Explosion Proof Lighting Classes Divisions and Groups

The concept of explosion proof light ratings can be confusing to understand. Hazardous workplace conditions can vary greatly and that means that a comprehensive rating system becomes necessary in order to ensure a safe work environment. [...]

02/16/16Lumen vs Foot-Candles – Which Is More Accurate for Measuring Illumination?

When a customer is looking for lights, the most common question posed is “how bright is this light?” As lighting technology improves, the standard measurements of illumination aren’t always the most accurate in calculating a light’s output. Understanding how each rating is determined will help you choose the best fixture for an application. [...]

02/10/16Benefits and Applications of Explosion Proof LED Lighting in Confined Spaces

The complex and hazardous nature of confined spaces present numerous risks for workers. Because of this, many businesses that operate in hazardous locations make use of explosion proof lights to prevent the ignition of flammable gases and dust particles. LED technology has contributed to the features of explosion proof lights by making them more reliable, sturdy and cost-effective. [...]

01/28/14The Future of Lighting: No More Lamp Servicing or Maintenance?

While on the one hand we are seeing a shift towards an integrated LED lamp/fixture modality, there does exist the potential for a “modular” approach to LED manufacture. This sounds contradictory, but let us explain in a little more detail. While an integrated LED/fixture design is indeed the probable route of future lighting design, the actual totality of an LED based luminaire is based on a combination of several distinct parts or “modules”. LEDs themselves are only represented by the “chip”; t [...]

11/15/13LED versus Fluorescent: Lumens per Watt is Only Part of the Story

Today it is commonplace to find T8 fixtures producing on the order of 80 to 100 lumens per watt of output, putting fluorescent lighting at the top of the efficient lighting ratings in terms of lumen per watt efficiency. However, this does not tell the whole story, and other factors come into play which affect the real world efficiency of fluorescent lighting and brings it a little more down to earth. [...]

12/05/12Explosion Proof Protection Against Combustible Dusts

One of the most serious dangers dusts pose, however, is the threat of fire or explosion if exposed to an ignition source. Almost any type of material, from iron to wheat, can become explosively flammable when ground into fine particulates, and in many cases little more than a spark is all that is needed to produce this ignition. [...]

11/07/12United States Hazardous Location Device Testing and Certification

Unlike electrical devices intended for use in typical commercial or household applications, equipment used in hazardous locations must prevent, prohibit, or otherwise mitigate the dangers posed by flammable gases, vapors and materials that can create an explosive atmosphere. In order for there to be a clear manner of ensuring the minimum amount of protection a device provides, it has been necessary for federal, state and local agencies to enact regulations [...]

09/01/12T12 Fluorescent Light Phaseout and Upgrade Alternatives

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 helped usher in a new era of tighter energy efficiency standards, and although the T12 for its time was indeed an efficient luminary, its design is such the further improvements to increase its efficiency are neither practical nor cost effective. As a result, the T12 is unable to meet the new energy standards required for modern lighting technologies and as of July 2012 was phased out of production. [...]

08/18/12Basics of Selecting Effective Paint Booth Lighting

The lighting of choice for most paint booths is standard four foot long fluorescent bulbs, usually arranged in fixtures containing either two or four bulbs grouped together. Fluorescents are popular because they produce a very wide spread of light output, which helps to evenly and uniformly illuminate the irregular surfaces of vehicles and thus better reveal imperfections in the surface to be coated. Fluorescent lamps are also popular because they can be had in a variety of color temperatures, w [...]
