02/02/14 Paint Spray Booth Lighting: Why Use Third Party Booths?

In order for a spray booth to be truly effective however, it must have the correct lighting. While at first glance booth lighting might not seem like such an involved subject, a closer look at just what constitutes effective spray booth light reveals a different and more complex appearance. Booth lighting is critical because it directly affects the ability of the operator to apply a quality finish. Good lighting allows an operator to easily note variations in finish color as well as finish text [...]

01/06/14 Is LED Lighting Really that Efficient and Can it Really Save that Much Money?

This means we can hang our LED fixture over our target surface, and get nearly all of the initial 1,000 lumens directed downwards towards it without the need for a reflector or the losses than come with the use of one. (Fig C) So, we could in effect actually use an LED fixture producing 600 lumens and using only 6 watts, to direct the same amount of light to our target as a 10 watt metal halide producing 1,000 lumens. [...]

11/15/13 LED versus Fluorescent: Lumens per Watt is Only Part of the Story

Today it is commonplace to find T8 fixtures producing on the order of 80 to 100 lumens per watt of output, putting fluorescent lighting at the top of the efficient lighting ratings in terms of lumen per watt efficiency. However, this does not tell the whole story, and other factors come into play which affect the real world efficiency of fluorescent lighting and brings it a little more down to earth. [...]

10/13/13 Hazardous Location Equipment Certification Schemes According to Region

Aside from the United States and Canada, hazardous location compliance schemes are dominated by the IECEx Scheme/ATEX Directive, with most countries adopting testing and approval standard based on their requirements. In some countries it is necessary to provide both IECEx/ATEX certification as well as testing reports under these schemes, while others will accept either/or. [...]

09/05/13 Basics of Hazardous Location Confined Space Lighting

The terms explosion proof and intrinsically safe refer to different types of electrical equipment which have been designed specifically to be used in locations where potential flammable or explosive atmospheres are present. Explosion proof equipment is generally higher powered and designed to prevent any ignitions within the lamp from igniting the atmosphere outside the lamp. Foe example, if gases enter into the lamp housing and are ignited by a spark, the lamp contains the ignited gases long e [...]

03/01/13 Savings and Incentives for Lighting Upgrades

The incandescent light bulb will be obsolete for all but the most minor lighting applications, LED lighting will have the lion’s share of the lighting markets, and energy efficiency standards and alternative lighting technologies will continue to evolve and grow as well. [...]

01/28/13 Explosion Proof and Intrinsically Safe Lighting in Confined Spaces

Of all the equipment typically used within confined spaces, lighting is the most common. There are normally no integral light sources within confined spaces, and the limited access and sealed nature of most confined spaces greatly limits the amount of ambient light which can enter, thus workers must provide their own illumination. There are only two types of lighting which should be considered suitable for use within confined spaces, either equipment that is approved explosion proof, or certifi [...]

12/02/12 Portability in Explosion Proof Lighting Equipment

Portable explosion proof lighting is constructed similarly to fixtures designed for permanent mounting, but there are a couple notable differences that must be taken into consideration if it is to be utilized safely. Since such lighting is portable, providing power for the lighting will require external cords and connections rather than the protected conduit and wiring permanently mounted fixtures use. This presents the first important difference that can cause potential problems if not fully un [...]

10/29/12 The Rise of LED Lighting: 50 Years of Development

Holonyak was perhaps one of the most visionary electrical engineering scientists of his time, proclaiming in 1963 shortly after he developed the first practical visible light LEDS that LED lighting would eventually replace the incandescent bulb. Not everyone shared his enthusiasm, and the slow advancements in LED technology that resulted from then plentiful and cheap electricity and cheap light bulbs served to help relegate LEDs to minimal use in low powered applications like indicator lighting [...]

09/01/12 T12 Fluorescent Light Phaseout and Upgrade Alternatives

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 helped usher in a new era of tighter energy efficiency standards, and although the T12 for its time was indeed an efficient luminary, its design is such the further improvements to increase its efficiency are neither practical nor cost effective. As a result, the T12 is unable to meet the new energy standards required for modern lighting technologies and as of July 2012 was phased out of production. [...]

08/18/12 Basics of Selecting Effective Paint Booth Lighting

The lighting of choice for most paint booths is standard four foot long fluorescent bulbs, usually arranged in fixtures containing either two or four bulbs grouped together. Fluorescents are popular because they produce a very wide spread of light output, which helps to evenly and uniformly illuminate the irregular surfaces of vehicles and thus better reveal imperfections in the surface to be coated. Fluorescent lamps are also popular because they can be had in a variety of color temperatures, w [...]

08/14/12 Hazardous Location Lighting Equipment: Compliance Does Not Stop at the Fixture

With all the emphasis on explosion proof lighting usually revolving around the fixtures themselves, it is very easy to overlook the fact that electrical safety and compliance with regulations relevant to the operation of electrical equipment in hazardous locations requires much more than simply choosing and installing the properly classed and approved light fixtures. [...]

07/24/12 LED Lighting Development: The Future of Lighting is Now

Since LEDs first became viable as an effective general use luminary about ten years ago, improvements in LED technology have advanced at a rapid pace. Initially considered to produce too little output for general lighting applications and plagued by problems with color quality and high costs, LEDs have now reached the point of surpassing most common types of light sources in terms of efficiency and output as well as light quality. [...]

02/17/12 Comparing LEDs and Incandescent Bulbs: Opposite Ends of the Lighting Spectrum

The process by which LEDs produce light is called electroluminescence, and it is far more efficient than the process of resistance used in incandescent lamps. Very little energy is wasted as heat in an LED, and more of the electrical energy converted to light. This allows LEDs to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent while using only a fraction as much electrical energy. [...]

01/31/12 Fluorescents, LEDs and Color Rendering Index: More than Just Color Reproduction

The color rendering index is a scale devised some time ago to measure how colors may change in appearance when illuminated by a light source as compared to an accepted standard light source with the same color temperature. For example, a color chart with several different colors may be set up and illuminated with an incandescent lamp which is used as a standard reference. Then, the same color chart will be illuminated with a fluorescent lamp and any changes in how each of the colors appear are t [...]

01/30/12 Lighting Color Temperature in Basic Terms and Applications

Commercial applications most often make use of lamps producing cool white light in the 4000 to 6500 Kelvin range because their light is sharper and more intense, with better color rendering and contrasting properties. Objects illuminated by these lamps appear brighter, more sharply defined, making these lamps well suited for offices, retail stores and commercial areas where detail and sharpness is important. Lamps with temperatures around 5000-5500 Kelvin are usually considered to produce natu [...]

09/26/11 Paint Booth Lights for Modern Paint Types

Paint manufacturers have taken these physical properties farther, and now use various pigments and materials to enhance the reflective or absorption properties of other materials to produce colors of exceptional intensity and hue. The problem for paint booth operators is obvious; with such complexities introduced into paint coloration and characteristics, being able to accurately match or reproduce colors is made more difficult. When light hitting an object does not contain a full spectrum of co [...]

09/26/11 Paint Spray Booth Lighting Fundamentals

Of huge importance to paint spray booth applications is the safety regulation compliance of the lighting equipment and its suitability for use in a hazardous environment. Due to the flammable nature of the chemicals and compounds used within the booth, removing potential sources of ignition is critical. Since any electrical equipment used is a potential source of heat, sparks or flame, it must be properly designed and certified for use in hazardous locations. Paint spry booth lighting that is mo [...]

05/27/11 Effectively Lighting the Hazardous Enclosed Workspace

Confined space lighting must also provide the widest possible coverage of the workspace and be bright enough and of high enough quality to allow trouble free visual determinations. Colors need to be rendered correctly and light levels must be high enough to allow normal activity without the need for compensation through slowed operations and overly repetitive verifications. Other considerations for confided space lighting include keeping heat production to a minimum, hands free operation, durabi [...]

09/02/10 Spray Booth Lights: Which Type for Best Results?

Most paint spray booths utilize one of two types of lighting fixtures in their design, either fluorescent tubes, or high intensity discharge lamps. Incandescent lamps are poor choices for spray booth applications because they are highly inefficient, have very short life-spans, and produce copious amounts of heat during their operation. [...]

08/02/10 Confined Space Lighting for Hazardous Locations

Confined spaces represent some of the most dangerous work places in commercial industries. Because of their enclosed nature confined spaces are poorly ventilated and allow volatile gases, fumes, vapors, and particulates to accumulate and increase in atmospheric density to potentially explosive levels. Confined spaces represent a hazardous work area and are loosely defined by a few general characteristics. [...]

04/22/10 Explosion Proof Lights: Lessening the Danger in Hazardous Work Areas

Hazardous work areas present special challenges for the workers and businesses that must operate within them. These work areas are often confined rooms or containers like fuel tanks where vapors and gases from work activities can become concentrated to dangerous levels. As well as the obvious dangers posed by inhalation of these contaminants are the not so obvious dangers that can have lethal consequences if not properly addressed. [...]
