LED Lighting and Effectively Managing Heat Production
Unlike traditional incandescent lamps which are designed to produce light by using the electrical resistance of a wire filament to radiate light energy and thus run extremely hot, LEDs on the other hand are quite sensitive to increases in temperature. Like traditional lamps, the lifespan of an LED is measured in hours, however, during the course of operation, the light output of an LED exhibits a gradual decline. [...] |

Explosion Proof and Intrinsically Safe Lighting in Confined Spaces
Of all the equipment typically used within confined spaces, lighting is the most common. There are normally no integral light sources within confined spaces, and the limited access and sealed nature of most confined spaces greatly limits the amount of ambient light which can enter, thus workers must provide their own illumination. There are only two types of lighting which should be considered suitable for use within confined spaces, either equipment that is approved explosion proof, or certifi [...] |

United States Hazardous Location Device Testing and Certification
Unlike electrical devices intended for use in typical commercial or household applications, equipment used in hazardous locations must prevent, prohibit, or otherwise mitigate the dangers posed by flammable gases, vapors and materials that can create an explosive atmosphere. In order for there to be a clear manner of ensuring the minimum amount of protection a device provides, it has been necessary for federal, state and local agencies to enact regulations [...] |

Hidden Danger of Combustible Dusts
Combustible dusts pose the same risks of fire and explosion in an industrial setting as any other flammable compound. Everything from iron filings to sugar powders can contain a great deal of explosive potential , and when ignited can produce enough force to destroy entire facilities. For many operators in environments where combustible dusts are commonly present as a result of normal operations, prevention is a major component of any comprehensive program of protection against accidental igniti [...] |

What is Explosion Proof Lighting?
At the basic level, explosion proof lighting is equipment designed to prevent the ignition of flammable or explosive materials, gases, or vapors. Lighting is one of the most commonly encountered electrical devices in any type of workplace and the types of lighting used can range from high power permanent fixtures to a common flashlight used for portable illumination. Every type of light used in a hazardous location must be explosion proof certified regardless of its size or type. Since lighting [...] |

Explosion Proof Oil Rig Lights: Special Considerations for a Growing Industry
It is not enough to simply incorporate standard explosion proof and intrinsically safe lighting designs into rig illumination plans. The potential damage that corrosion and dampness can erode the integrity of explosion proof housings and fixtures must also be taken into consideration as well. As a result, explosion proof oil rig lighting must be specifically designed to meet marine use compliance as well as NEC, ATEX or IECex compliance if safe operation over long term use is to be ensured.

LEDs and Actual LED Lifetime versus Lumen Maintenance
One of the bigger areas of confusion for consumers and commercial applications is the manner in which LED longevity and output are measured. We often see LEDs advertised as having a “50,000 hour lifespan”, but what does this really mean? For most people, the natural assumption would be that after 50,000 hours, the LED can be expected to soon fail to produce light, in essence, burn out much like a traditional incandescent lamp does at the end of its life cycle. However, this is not exactly the ca [...] |

LED Mine Lighting and Worker Safety
Utilizing controlled tests involving standard mining cap lights, common commercial grade LEDs, and a special LED mining light design of their own making, they found that for most intents and purposes, LEDs provided a greater degree of contrast and improved threat detection times as shown by test subjects. Particularly in the case of workers over the age of 40, with 43 years being the average age of mine workers, contrasting of LED illuminated objects was improved 43%. Additionally, threat detect [...] |

Mine Lighting and Improving Effectiveness and Safety with LEDs
Electrical lighting for mines has predominantly been of a few specific types including incandescent lamps, HID luminaires, and fluorescent tubes. The problems with such mine lighting technologies stems largely from their power requirements and low durability factors. Each of these lighting types is of a construction that utilizes fragile materials such as glass and thin wire filaments that hold little resistance to abusive handling and conditions. Compounding the durability issue is the hazardou [...] |

Paint Spray Booth Lighting: Safety and Effectiveness
Lighting for paint spray booths must adhere to federal and local regulations regarding the use of lighting in hazardous locations. OSHA offers a wealth of information on explosion proof lighting and hazardous locations and it is never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer if you’ll be operating a paint booth. Lighting for spray paint booths must be approved for hazardous locations and carry certification proving its suitability for use in a particular environment. Paint [...] |

Modern Mining Lights: From Birds to Flames to LEDs
It wouldn’t be until 1902 that practical electrical lamps were introduced in mines and removed the need for open flames. Electrical lamps greatly reduced the possibility of fires and explosions, but again, by today’s standards they were hardly safe. Early electric lamps got hot, the batteries were unwieldy and leaked acids, and shattered bulbs and shorted wires were all too capable of causing an accident. By the 1930’s electric lighting was the only mine lighting in use, although the older Davy [...] |

Paint Spray Booth Lighting Fundamentals
Of huge importance to paint spray booth applications is the safety regulation compliance of the lighting equipment and its suitability for use in a hazardous environment. Due to the flammable nature of the chemicals and compounds used within the booth, removing potential sources of ignition is critical. Since any electrical equipment used is a potential source of heat, sparks or flame, it must be properly designed and certified for use in hazardous locations. Paint spry booth lighting that is mo [...] |

IECex/ATEX and North American NEC HAZLOC Equipment Classification
North America is presently not operating with the IECex/ATEX schemes although some effort has been made to produce some homogenity between North American and European Standards, most notably the US and Canada's adoption of a Zone system (NEC 505) modeled after European Schemes. However, despite the great similarity between North American and European Zone systems, they are not identical and are not interchangeable.

Confined Space Lighting for Hazardous Locations
Confined spaces represent some of the most dangerous work places in commercial industries. Because of their enclosed nature confined spaces are poorly ventilated and allow volatile gases, fumes, vapors, and particulates to accumulate and increase in atmospheric density to potentially explosive levels. Confined spaces represent a hazardous work area and are loosely defined by a few general characteristics. [...] |

Explosion Proof and Intrinsically Safe: There is a Difference
When it comes to explosion proof lighting many people have trouble understanding exactly what the term means. Factor in that there is also the term “intrinsically safe light” which is related to explosion proof lighting, and the fact that few people have had the benefit of a good layman explanation of the terms, and it becomes clear that there is plenty of room for confusion. Why are Explosion Proof Lights Different?
Marine engine rooms, commercial paint booths, chemical storerooms, grain silos, tank farms; what do they all have in common? Each and every one of these is a potential bomb waiting to go off. Under certain conditions and with the right combination of circumstances, the possibility of a catastrophic explosion occurring becomes a near certainty. [...] |
